The Best Time of Day for Family Photos with Young Children

One of the questions I'm asked most often by parents is, "What is the best time of day for a family photoshoot?". If you have babies, toddlers, or young children, timing can make a huge difference to how relaxed everyone feels during your session. As a family photographer in Ashford, Kent, I always work with families to find a time that fits around naps, meal times, and your child's natural routine.

Here's why choosing the right time of day helps create beautiful, natural family photographs.

Golden Hour: The Secret to Beautiful Family Photos

The best time for outdoor family photography is during golden hour—the hour before sunset.

At this time of day, the sunlight is softer, warmer, and more flattering than the bright midday sun. Instead of harsh shadows and squinting eyes, you'll get beautiful golden light that creates a relaxed, dreamy feel in your photographs. Golden hour is especially perfect during the summer months in Kent, when evenings are longer and temperatures are cooler for little ones.

What If My Child Goes to Bed Early?

Don't worry—this is one of the biggest concerns parents have!

For families with babies or toddlers, I often recommend:

  • Booking a slightly earlier evening session.

  • Choosing a shaded woodland location where the light stays soft for longer.

  • Scheduling your session after an afternoon nap.

  • Bringing a favourite snack and drink for little energy boosts.

Every child is different, and we'll choose a time that works best for your family.

Why Midday Isn't Ideal

While midday might seem convenient, it's usually the most difficult time for outdoor photography.

The sun sits high in the sky, creating:

  • Harsh shadows on faces.

  • Bright highlights.

  • Squinting in photographs.

  • Hot temperatures, especially in summer.

This can make children uncomfortable and less likely to enjoy the experience. Whenever possible, I recommend avoiding midday sessions outdoors.

The Best Time for Family Photos by Season

Spring

Late afternoon to early evening works beautifully, with soft light and colourful blossoms creating a fresh, natural backdrop.

Summer

Golden hour is ideal. Longer evenings mean children often have more time to play outdoors while enjoying comfortable temperatures.

Autumn

The warm autumn colours pair perfectly with late afternoon light, creating cosy family portraits full of rich seasonal tones.

Winter

Since the sun sets much earlier, we can often photograph during the afternoon, making winter sessions much easier for families with young children.

Working Around Your Child's Routine

As a parent, you know your child's schedule better than anyone.

When planning your session, think about:

  • Nap times.

  • Meal times.

  • When they're usually happiest.

  • Any activities that might leave them tired beforehand.

A well-rested child is far more likely to enjoy exploring, laughing, and playing during your session—which leads to genuine smiles and natural photographs.

It's About Play, Not Perfect Poses

One of the biggest misconceptions about family photography is that children need to sit still and smile at the camera.

In reality, the best photographs happen when children are free to be themselves.

We'll walk together, play games, cuddle, explore nature, and let your little ones lead the adventure. Those real moments of laughter, curiosity, and connection are the memories you'll treasure most.

Why Timing Matters

Choosing the right time of day isn't just about beautiful light—it's about creating a relaxed experience for the whole family. When children are comfortable and happy, parents naturally relax too. That's when the magic happens, and we capture authentic moments that reflect your family just as you are.
