Newborn Photography in Kent: What to Expect From a Relaxed Newborn Photoshoot
Having a new baby is a pretty big change, and the first few weeks can feel like a complete whirlwind. Between feeds, nappy changes, cuddles and trying to catch up on some sleep, arranging a newborn photoshoot might feel like one more thing to organise.
It doesn't have to be.
As a newborn photographer in Kent, I offer relaxed, natural photography sessions designed to fit around your family rather than the other way around. I travel to you for at-home newborn photography, so you can stay somewhere your baby already knows and has everything they need.
I'm based in Ashford and photograph newborns and families throughout Kent and the surrounding areas, including Canterbury, Tenterden, Folkestone, Hythe, Romney Marsh, New Romney, Dymchurch, Dover, Deal, Faversham, Maidstone and Rye.

Why choose an at-home newborn photoshoot?
There is something lovely about photographing a new baby at home.
It's where you've brought them home, where you've had those first cuddles and where you're beginning to settle into life together.
It also happens to be a really practical place for a newborn photography session.
There's no need to pack half the house into the car or worry about getting somewhere on time. If your baby needs feeding, changing or settling, everything you need is already there. I'll come to your home and use the rooms and light that work best.
You don't need a Pinterest-perfect house either. I'll move things around if necessary, find the best available light and keep the focus on you and your baby.
What if my baby won't sleep?
This is one of the most common things parents worry about before a newborn photography session. But your baby doesn't have to sleep. Some babies spend most of their session asleep. Others are wide awake, looking around, feeding or wanting to be held. All of those things can make lovely photographs.
Rather than trying to force your baby into a particular routine for the sake of photographs, we'll work around what they're doing. A wide-eyed photograph looking up at mum can be just as special as a photograph of a sleeping newborn.

Natural newborn photography in Kent
My style is natural newborn photography, rather than heavily posed studio photography.
That doesn't mean there is no direction at all. I'll help you with where to stand, how to hold your baby and where the light works best, but I don't want you worrying about getting every movement exactly right.
We'll photograph the things that naturally happen when you're together. A baby curled up against dad. Mum holding those tiny fingers. An older sibling having a cuddle. The whole family squeezed together on the sofa. A tiny yawn. A little stretch. A baby staring up at their parents.
These are the photographs that help you remember what those first weeks were actually like.
Newborn photographs aren't just about the baby
It's very easy to focus entirely on the new arrival. They're obviously the star of the show, but I'd also encourage you to get in front of the camera.
You'll want photographs of your baby on their own, but you'll also want to remember what you looked like holding them, how small they were against you and the people who were there during those first weeks.
Your newborn session can include:
Baby portraits
Tiny hands and feet
Parents with their baby
Mum and baby
Dad and baby
Siblings with the new arrival
Whole-family photographs
Natural photographs around your home
Individual photographs of older children
Little everyday moments
You don't have to choose between photographs of your baby and photographs of your family.
You can have both.

What about older brothers and sisters?
If you've already got children, they are an important part of your newborn photographs too.
I don't expect older children to sit perfectly, smile on cue or cooperate for a long list of photographs. We'll keep things relaxed.
They might want to cuddle the baby. They might want to look at their new brother or sister. They might be more interested in showing me their toys. That's fine.
Sometimes the photographs that happen when children aren't being asked to perform are the ones that show their personalities best.
When is the best time for newborn photography?
There's no magic date that you have to stick to. Many families choose to have newborn photographs during the first few weeks, when babies are still very small and spending lots of time sleeping and being cuddled.
But you haven't missed your chance if your baby is older. A slightly older newborn may be more alert and interested in what's happening around them, which can give you a completely different type of photograph.
If you've recently had your baby and haven't booked a photographer yet, get in touch rather than assuming it's too late.

What should we wear?
You don't need to buy special outfits for your newborn photography session. For parents and older children, simple, comfortable clothing usually works beautifully.
Light, neutral and natural colours tend to photograph well and keep the attention on your family. There's no need for everyone to wear exactly the same thing.
For your baby, keep it simple. A sleepsuit, vest or something they're already comfortable wearing is absolutely fine.
If you'd like some photographs of your baby without clothes, we can keep them simple and natural too, but there is never any pressure to do this.
How long does a newborn photography session take?
My newborn sessions are designed to be unhurried. The session lasts around 60–90 minutes, giving us enough time to photograph your family without trying to rush through a list of poses.
If your baby needs a feed halfway through, we stop. If they need changing, we stop. If they fall asleep while you're cuddling them, we photograph that instead.
There is no need to panic if the first 20 minutes don't go according to plan. Newborn photography works much better when everyone is relaxed.

Looking for a newborn photographer near me?
If you've searched Google for “newborn photographer near me”, you may be surprised at how many different styles of newborn photography there are.
Some photographers specialise in elaborate posed studio newborn portraits. Others concentrate on documentary-style photographs.
My approach sits somewhere in between: I'll give you gentle direction when you need it, while keeping the photographs natural and centred around your family.
If you like photographs that feel relaxed, simple and personal, rather than overly staged, an at-home newborn session could be a good fit.
Your baby's first photographs don't have to be perfect
Your house doesn't need to look perfect.
Your baby doesn't need to sleep.
Your older children don't need to behave perfectly.
And you don't need to know what to do in front of the camera.
The point of a newborn photoshoot isn't to create a picture-perfect version of family life.
It's to photograph this little stage while your baby is still tiny, your family is adjusting to a new routine and everyone is getting to know each other. Those ordinary details are often the things you'll want to remember most.
