At-Home Newborn Photoshoot Checklist | Everything You Need to Know Before I Visit

There's something incredibly special about photographing a new baby in the place where their story begins – home.

No packing up the changing bag, no rushing out of the door and no worrying if your baby needs feeding every 20 minutes. My in-home newborn sessions are designed to be relaxed, natural and completely baby-led, allowing you to simply enjoy these precious first weeks.

If you're preparing for an at-home newborn photoshoot in Ashford, Folkestone, Tenterden, Maidstone, Rye, Hythe, Dover or the surrounding areas, here's everything you need to know.

1. You Don't Need a Perfect House

This is probably the biggest worry parents have, so let's get it out of the way first.

Your home does not need to look like it's come straight out of a magazine.

I'm looking for light, connection and genuine moments—not spotless kitchens or perfectly made beds. If there's a room with good natural light and enough space for us to move around, that's all we need.

I'll gently move a few bits if needed and choose the best areas as we go. Please don't feel the need to apologise for any mess there might be!

2. Keep Baby Comfortable

There's no need for a strict schedule before I arrive.

Feed your baby when they need it, cuddle them if they're unsettled and don't worry whether they're asleep or awake. Some of the sweetest photographs happen when babies are stretching, yawning or gazing up at their parents.

If you use a dummy, have it nearby, and keep nappies, wipes and milk within easy reach.

3. Dress Baby in Something Simple

Soft, neutral baby grows or knitted outfits photograph beautifully.

Avoid clothes with large logos or busy patterns, and if you'd like some images in just a nappy or wrapped in a blanket, choose clothing that's easy to remove without disturbing them too much.

4. Wear Clothes That Feel Like You

Neutral tones and soft colours create timeless photographs that won't date.

Cream, beige, white, grey, sage or muted earthy colours work wonderfully, but the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident.

You don't need matching outfits—coordinating colours always look more natural.

5. Have a Favourite Blanket Ready

A simple knitted blanket or one that has sentimental value can add a lovely personal touch.

We'll also use your sofa, bed, nursery or wherever has the best natural light, making the photographs feel even more meaningful because they're taken in your own home.

6. Include the Whole Family

These sessions aren't just about your newborn.

Older siblings are free to play, cuddle, explore and take breaks whenever they need to. Partners are encouraged to get involved, and there is absolutely no expectation for children to sit still or smile at the camera.

The best images come from interaction rather than perfection.

7. Relax and Go With the Flow

Babies cry.

Toddlers run away.

Someone will probably need a snack.

That's completely normal.

An at-home newborn session moves at your family's pace, with plenty of time for feeding, changing, cuddling and settling. There's no pressure to rush through a checklist or stick to a timetable.

Why Choose an At-Home Newborn Photoshoot?

The first few weeks with a new baby pass in a blur, and leaving the house can feel like a military operation.

Having your newborn photos taken at home means you can stay in familiar surroundings while capturing the little details you'll want to remember forever—the nursery you've carefully prepared, the cosy sofa where you've spent endless hours cuddling, and the family home where your baby's story begins.
