How to Prepare Your Child for a Family Photo Shoot: 10 Helpful Tips

Planning a family photo session can be exciting — but if you're a parent, you might also be wondering how to make sure your child is happy, calm, and ready to smile for the camera. The good news? With a little preparation, your photo shoot can be a fun, relaxed experience that captures your child’s true personality.

As a family photographer based in Ashford, Kent, I’ve worked with children of all ages and temperaments. Here are my top tips to help you prepare your child for a photo shoot — and get the beautiful, natural portraits you’re hoping for.

1. Talk to Your Child About What to Expect

Let them know what’s happening and why! Explain that a friendly photographer will be taking some pictures, and it’s all about having fun together. For young children, frame it like a little adventure or a play session in the woods or park.

2. Schedule Around Their Routine

If your child is happiest in the morning or after their nap, that’s the best time to plan your shoot. A well-rested, well-fed child is more likely to be relaxed, happy and cooperative during the session.

3. Choose Comfortable Clothing

Make sure their outfit is comfortable, fits well, and allows them to move freely. Avoid scratchy fabrics, stiff collars or anything that might irritate them. Soft, neutral colours and layers work beautifully in outdoor settings — and keep the focus on your child’s expressions.

4. Bring Snacks and Water

Sometimes a quick snack or drink can work wonders during a shoot. Pack mess-free, non-sticky snacks and a bottle of water just in case your child needs a little energy boost.

5. Bring a Favourite Toy or Comfort Item

If your child has a special cuddly toy or blanket, bring it along! Not only can it help soothe nerves, but it can also be a sweet part of the story captured in your photos.

6. Let Them Be Themselves

The best photos are often the ones where your child is simply being them. Let them explore, run, laugh, and interact naturally. I’ll be ready to capture those candid, joyful moments that truly reflect who they are.

7. Keep Things Positive and Pressure-Free

Avoid putting pressure on your child to smile or behave “perfectly.” Encouragement and praise go a long way. A calm, relaxed parent helps create a calm, relaxed child.

8. Be Ready to Play

Children love it when their parents get involved! Be prepared to tickle, swing them around, or join in with a game. It not only helps them feel at ease, but creates warm, interactive images you’ll treasure.

9. Embrace the Imperfection

Some of the best photos come from unexpected moments — silly faces, wind-blown hair, muddy knees. Don’t worry if everything isn’t “picture perfect.” Natural, real moments are often the most meaningful.
