Bluebell Family Photoshoots in Kent – Best Time, What to Wear & How to Book

Everything You Need to Know for That Extra Special Spring Session

There’s something undeniably magical about bluebell season. Those soft carpets of purpley-blue, dappled sunlight through the trees, and a sense that spring has truly arrived. It’s hands-down one of my favourite times of year to photograph families—and bluebell woods make the perfect backdrop for relaxed, natural photos.

If you’ve ever thought about booking a spring session, here’s why a bluebell shoot might just be the one for you.

Why Bluebells Are So Special

Bluebells are like a magical gift from nature. They transform ordinary woodland into something totally enchanting—for only a few short weeks each year.

What makes them especially beautiful in family photos is the mix of colour, texture and light. It’s soft, timeless, and full of life—just like your family. And because it’s so seasonal, it gives your images a really distinct, once-a-year feel.

When Is the Best Time for a Bluebell Photoshoot?

In Kent, bluebells usually bloom around mid to late April, sometimes into early May—depending on the weather. This year they have been particularly late so it pays to be flexible!

There’s a small window where they’re at their absolute best, so I always recommend booking your session early. I keep a close eye on my favourite spots and will guide you on exact timing as the season approaches.

What to Wear for Your Bluebell Session

Soft, natural tones work beautifully against the purple-blue and green of the woodland. Think whites, creams, soft blues, greys, light pinks, or earthy neutrals. Avoid anything too bold or bright—simple is best.

And remember—we’ll be outdoors, so comfy shoes (even wellies for little ones) are a great shout.

Are Bluebell Shoots Good for Kids?

Absolutely. In fact, they’re perfect. Most bluebell woods have open paths, shaded areas, and space to roam (without trampling the flowers!). Kids can explore, play, and just be themselves—while I capture all the joy, cuddles, and in-between moments.

And there’s something about the setting that brings a real calmness to the session—it’s one of the most peaceful times of year to shoot.

A Few Friendly Notes About the Bluebells

Bluebells are protected in the UK, and part of the magic is looking after them properly. I only shoot in trusted locations with clear paths and safe areas to work in, and I always take care to leave no trace. We’ll keep little feet on the paths and still get those gorgeous photos—it's completely do-able.
