What to Wear for Family Photos: 5 Simple Tips for Beautiful, Timeless Images
One of the first questions I get from families after booking their session is: "What should we wear?"
It's completely understandable. You want your photos to look natural and timeless, but choosing outfits for the whole family can suddenly feel like a much bigger task than expected.
The good news? You don't need to buy a whole new wardrobe or spend hours trying to make everyone match perfectly. The best family photographs are about genuine connection, laughter and the little moments you share together. Your clothing should simply complement those moments rather than distract from them.
Here are my five favourite styling tips to help you feel confident before your family photography session.

1. Choose Soft, Neutral Colours
Neutral tones photograph beautifully in every season and work perfectly with natural outdoor locations. Think creams, beige, oatmeal, sage green, dusty blue, soft browns and muted terracotta. These colours create a calm, timeless look that keeps the attention exactly where it should be – on your family. Bright neon colours and very bold shades can dominate an image and reflect unwanted colour onto skin tones, so softer shades are always a safe choice.
2. Coordinate, Don't Match
Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical white shirts and jeans. Instead, choose a simple colour palette and let each family member wear something slightly different within those colours. Mixing textures and tones creates a more relaxed, natural look while still feeling cohesive.
For example: Mum in a cream dress. Dad in a light blue shirt and neutral chinos. One child in sage green. Another in soft beige. The result feels effortless rather than overly styled.

3. Keep It Timeless
Family photographs are an investment that you'll hopefully be looking at for decades.
Choosing classic clothing means your images won't feel dated in a few years' time. Try to avoid large logos, character clothing and busy patterns that can pull attention away from faces and emotions. Simple outfits always allow the connection between your family to shine through.
4. Wear Something You Can Move In
The best family photos rarely involve everyone standing still and smiling at the camera.
Instead, we'll be walking, cuddling, playing games, exploring and having fun together. Comfortable clothing makes all of those moments feel natural. Flowy dresses, soft knits, linen shirts and clothes that children can run around in always photograph beautifully because everyone feels relaxed and free to be themselves.

5. Dress for the Season
Choosing fabrics that suit the time of year helps your photographs feel authentic and natural. For summer sessions, lightweight cottons and linen create beautiful movement and keep everyone comfortable. For autumn or cooler evenings, cosy knitwear, layered textures and earthy colours add warmth and depth to your images without feeling bulky.

The Most Important Tip:
The perfect outfit isn't the one that's most fashionable or expensive. It's the one that makes you feel comfortable, confident and able to focus on your family instead of your clothes.
Years from now, your children won't remember what everyone was wearing. They'll remember being cuddled, chasing bubbles, holding hands and laughing together. That's what makes a family photograph truly timeless.
Still Not Sure What to Wear? I'm also always happy to help you put outfits together before your session, so you never have to figure it out alone. Because choosing what to wear should be the easiest part of creating beautiful family memories.
