Photography with Toddlers - How to Get the Most Out of Your Photography Session

Let’s be honest—photographing toddlers can be tricky! They’re full of energy, sometimes unpredictable and have no interest in sitting still for a perfectly posed portrait. But that’s also what makes photos of toddlers so good! Their curiosity, giggles, and cheeky personalities shine through when they’re given the freedom to be themselves.

If you're planning a photography session with your little whirlwind, here are some tried-and-tested tips to make the experience enjoyable (and get the best photos possible!).

1. Choose the Right Time

Timing is key! Schedule your session when your toddler is well-rested and fed—grumpy, hungry little ones are not keen on posing for the camera. Mornings or just after a nap tend to be the best times for happy, cooperative children, but let me know when you think is the ideal timing for your family.

2. Location

Choose a setting where your child feels comfortable and has space to explore. Outdoor locations like parks, woodlands, or meadows work brilliantly, as they offer natural light and plenty of opportunities for natural shots. Plus, toddlers often love running around, so why not embrace it?

3. Keep It Fun and Playful

Forget formal poses, the best toddler photography comes from capturing real moments—tickle fights, playing peekaboo from behind trees, or running towards the camera with a big smile. Bring their favourite toy, play their favorite song, and let them have fun.

4. Dress for Comfort

Choose outfits that reflect their personality but are also comfy and practical. Simple dresses, dungarees, or neutral-toned clothes work well. Avoid bright bold colours that can be distracting in photos. If your unsure what to wear, you can find a blog post about how to dress for photos on my website.

5. Go with the Flow

Toddlers don’t follow instructions like adults do—and that’s okay! The best approach is to work with their mood rather than against it. If they want to run, let them! If they want to stop and pick flowers, we'll capture that moment of curiosity. Relaxed, natural photos always beat forced smiles.

6. Bring Snacks (Lots of Them!)

A well-timed snack break can be a lifesaver if your toddler starts to lose interest. Easy, mess-free snacks like raisins work best—nothing too sticky or colorful that might end up all over their face or outfit.

7. Be prepared to bring the fun!

As your little ones parent, you know all the tricks and games they love to play, so be prepared to pull them out of your sleeve when needed during your session. As your photography, I will also have my own ideas too so don't panic! But if all else fails, let them take the lead and enjoy the experience—sometimes, the in-between moments are the most beautiful.

Final Thoughts

Your toddler’s personality changes so quickly, and capturing this fleeting stage is so special. Embrace the chaos, have fun, and remember—perfection is overrated! The best toddler photos are the ones filled with love, laughter, and a little bit of wild energy.
