Booking a family photoshoot is an exciting way to capture beautiful memories, but let’s be honest—getting everyone ready can feel a bit overwhelming! From outfit choices to keeping everyone happy, there’s a lot to think about. But don’t worry, I’ve got some top tips for how to make your family photography session as relaxed and fun as possible.
1. Choose the Right Location
The perfect location sets the tone for your photos. Whether it’s a scenic park, a beautiful woodland, or even your own garden (or mine!), pick a place that feels natural and comfortable for your family. I love shooting outdoors in the beautiful landscapes around Ashford or elsewhere in Kent, where kids can explore, have fun and be themselves!
2. Coordinate (But Don’t Match) Outfits
Instead of dressing everyone in identical white shirts, opt for a color palette that complements each other—think soft neutrals, earthy tones, or whites mixed with textures and denim. Avoid logos and loud patterns that can distract from your faces. Most importantly, wear something comfortable so you can move freely and have fun! I have a previous blog post on this topic so have a look if you would like some more details on how to make your outfits work for your shoot.
3. Keep It Relaxed and Natural
The best family photos capture genuine moments—laughs, cuddles, and playful interactions. Don’t stress about forcing perfect poses; instead, focus on enjoying the moment with your loved ones. I’ll guide you throughout the session to make sure you look your best while keeping things effortless and fun.
4. Prepare the Children (and Grown-Ups!)
Children can be unpredictable, and that’s okay! Bring along their favorite toy or snack to keep them happy. For adults, a little prep helps too to arrive with a positive mindset. A relaxed and fun atmosphere always shines through in the photos!
5. Bring a Few Personal Touches
Incorporating meaningful items—like a beloved blanket to sit on, a sentimental toy, or even your dog—can add a personal touch to your photos. These small details help tell your family’s unique story and make the images even more special.
6. Plan a Fun Activity
Make your session even more enjoyable by incorporating an activity your family loves. Whether it’s a walk in the woods, a playful game, or flying a kite, keeping everyone engaged results in natural, joy-filled moments that look fantastic on camera. It will instantly put your children at ease to play a familiar game or sing a familiar song - (ring-a-ring-a-roses, row-row-row your boat etc).

If you’re ready to capture some incredible family memories, I’d love to help! Get in touch to book your session, and let’s create some magic together. Please contact me through my website, email or social media to book your Family Photoshoot in the Ashford, Kent area today.
